Different gemstones display unique optical reactions when observed under a gem polariscope, making it a valuable tool for gemstone identification. This instrument is designed to analyze a gemstone’s pleochroism, optic character, and polarization properties with ease. A standard gem polariscope consists of an upper and lower polarizing filter, a light source, a glass stage, and an interference sphere lens (except for the FPP-30 model). The lower polarizer remains fixed, while the upper one rotates to adjust polarization angles. A rotating glass stage positioned above the lower polarizer allows precise observation. The interference sphere lens is used to examine gemstone interference patterns, aiding in advanced optical analysis.
The gem polariscope is widely used to differentiate between isotropic and anisotropic gemstones and to identify microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline aggregates. It also helps determine whether a birefringent gemstone has uniaxial or biaxial optical properties. For optimal results, the polariscope should be used in combination with other gemological tools such as a refractometer, UV fluorescence lamp, and microscope. Together, these gem testing instruments provide a comprehensive approach to gemstone identification.
After determining that the gemstone is anisotropic, the interference sphere can be used to further analyze its optical axis properties.
